Coach Owuor is hoping to repeat the team's exploits from the inaugural edition held in 2019
National men’s basketball team, Kenya Morans, began their training on Monday 12 June, three days after the provisional team was named ahead of the second edition of the FIBA Africa AfroCan.
The Cliff Owuor- coached side has less than four weeks to get ready for the continental showpiece set for set for 8 to 16 July in Angola.
The silver medalists from the inaugural edition held in 2019 and won by Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been placed in pool A against Gabon and the winner of the playoff between Zone 2's Guinea and teams from Zones 3.
Ruthless Gabon beat Equatorial Guinea 110-32 in the race to the AfroCan in a Zone 4 qualifier at the Palais Polyvalent des Sports, Yaounde in March to qualify.
Owuor who missed the last window of the FIBA Africa World Cup qualifiers in July with his assistant Collins Gaya taking over the reigns at the time, made a comeback in the team.
The Rwanda-based tactician is already in the country and taking charge of training at Nyayo Indoor Arena where the Kenyan-based players named in the squad have turned up for training.
Being a reserve of local-based players 19 of the 29 players are drawn from the local league led by skipper Griffin Ligare and his deputy Eric Mutoro.
The selections panel has also handed a few players their first call ups with the Kenyatta University Pirates duo of Dolphine Otieno and Ivan Mombiru leading the charge.
Meanwhile, the other Zone Five representatives (Kenya qualified automatically), fight for a place in the competition when Tanzania hosts the zonal qualifiers for from 17 to 23 June.
Teams heading to the regional qualifier heading to Dar es Salaam include Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia and South Sudan.
